PortaBooks are braille books formatted as Grade 2 braille files on disk, designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. A variety of titles are available in this format, ranging from A Manual for Living to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. These books are in a plain braille format, containing only symbols for braille characters, carriage returns, and spaces. They can be read without special software using a braille reading device such as a Bookworm; a notetaker with a braille display, such as a Braille Lite or BrailleNote; a notetaker that can speak braille files, such as a Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak, or VoiceNote; or a computer with a braille display. These braille books resemble the Web-Braille books distributed by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) except that instead of being formatted to be embossed with a braille printer, they are formatted to be read easily with a braille-aware device. Books files range from 56K (kilobytes) to 900K in size, while files containing sections of the books are less than 50K in length. COMPATIBILITY: When read on a computer, for use with IBM and IBM-compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: For reading on a computer, Windows word processors such as WordPad, Microsoft Word, and WordPerfect for Windows are recommended.
