Report: Pueblo sidewalks still not ADA-compliant
Pueblo Chieftain - 3/30/2019
March 30-- Mar. 30--The Pueblo Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee presented its annual report to City Council this week, which says the city hasn't complied with a federal agreement to make its sidewalks ADA-compliant.
Kristen Castor, the secretary of the Pueblo Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee, presented other goals the group would like to see completed.
Castor said one of the primary goals of the committee is to continue monitoring access to city facilities and services, noting that the condition of Pueblo's sidewalks are noncompliant with a settlement agreement the city of Pueblo reached with the Department of Justice in 2004.
The DOJ initiated a compliance review of the city under title II of the ADA in 2004, and the committee was established as part of the settlement agreement the city and DOJ reached.
Castor also said goals of the committee include strengthening public transit options and doing more publicity and outreach.
Castor said in 2018 the committee to a look at its membership and found it needed more diversity.
Castor said the committee is reaching out to groups such as the NAACP and an East Pueblo neighborhood group, as well as Friendly Harbor.
"We haven't heard of any grievances from this community, but whenever new members join us they always bring a new perspective," the report presented to council by Castor states.
Castor said membership is the biggest challenge facing the committee.
"We have all been appointed by different administrations and we're not quite sure who is a confirmed member and who is just someone we have conferred membership onto," the report states. "Then there is the ongoing effort to involve entirely new people and train them in leadership as we are doing with our executive committee."
