Savannah's LIFE Inc. to host annual wheelchair cleaning, resource fair

Savannah Morning News - 4/10/2019

April 09--Savannah-based nonprofit Living Independence For Everyone is looking to raise awareness about local resources for people with disabilities during its annual Abilities Resource Fair and Wheelchair Cleaning Event on Saturday.

"Eighty-three percent of people with disabilities acquire their disability during their working lives and most don't know where to start to look for information about available supports," said Fran Todd, LIFE director of development. "Our event will answer this challenge by highlighting a range of services that assist individuals in becoming as independent as they can and want to be."

About 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and about 26 percent of adults in the United States have some type of disability. The percentage of people living with disabilities is highest in the south, according to the agency.

LIFE Inc. is dedicated to enriching and improving the lives of people with disabilities in the southeast. The organization started in 1986 in Chatham County and now provides services for 11 counties in southeast Georgia.

"Our mission is to promote independent living and advance community change for everyone," she said.

The resource fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Windsor Forest High School on Largo Drive.

New this year is the focus on cross-disability, according to Todd.

"We've expanded our annual wheelchair cleaning, an event that we've successfully put on for 21 years, into a cross-disability event featuring displays and presentations from other organizations and agencies which provide our consumers with their supports. The expanded space of the high school provides ample room to showcase the community resources available for individuals with disabilities.

"With booths and presentations offering insights into a diverse range of goods and services, our Celebrate Abilities Resource Fair will be an educational day, but also one of family fun and food for the attendees," Todd said.

"This empowering event will provide the individuals in our community with the tools they need to live independent lives in our community."
