Respite-care program has openings

DAYBreak Respite Care, an outreach ministry of Centenary United Methodist Church, has openings for adults with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease or related dementia.

DAYBreak is located at the church, 646 W. Fifth St., and operates from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Parkinson's disease

support group to meet

The Parkinson's Forward support group for patients and their caregivers will meet at 1 p.m. Monday at Senior Services Inc., 2895 Shorefair Drive.

Shepherd's Center, church plan trip

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem and Ardmore Journeys, a program of Ardmore Baptist Church, will make a day trip Nov. 10 to the National D-Day Memorial Park in Bedford, Va. The bus will leave Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., at 8 a.m. and return about 5:30 p.m.

The cost is $30 and includes the bus ride, a short film and a guided tour of the grounds and exhibits. Lunch is not included in the cost and will be at Liberty Station, a restored train station.

Wheelchairs may be available for people with mobility problems.

Free health screenings available Nov. 30

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem and Novant Health will offer free health screenings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.Nov. 30. The screenings will assess body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol (total, good and bad), triglycerides, glucose and hemoglobin A1C.

Registration is required and can be done by calling 336-277-1880 or emailing CommunityWellness @novanthealth.org. A minimum of 30 preregistered participants are required to guarantee the screenings.

Get help with Medicare open enrollment

With the annual Medicare open enrollment taking place from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, the Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem will hold workshops on Fridays during that period to assist beneficiaries in choosing the correct drug plan and the Medicare Advantage plans and in making changes.

Trained counselors from the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIP, will be available to assist with sign-ups.

Workshops will be held this Friday, and on Nov. 3, 10 and 17, and Dec. 1. One-hour appointments are available between 1 and 5 p.m. on those days. The workshops will be held at the Shepherd's Center, 1700 Ebert St.

Medicare workshop set for Monday

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem will have a free Medicare workshop for people to learn about the insurance options available.

The session will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Walkertown Branch Library, 2969 Main St., Walkertown.

Bridge tourney to aid Shepherd's Center

Salemtowne Moravian Retirement Community will hold its 2017 Bridge Luncheon and Tournament on Wednesday.

This year the tournament will celebrate 14 years of promoting local community agencies that help support the lives of area residents, particularly senior adults.

This year's beneficiary is the Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem, an interfaith ministry that promotes and supports successful aging by providing direct services, volunteer opportunities and enrichment programs for older adults.

Lunch will be 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the bridge tournament will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

An added feature this year will be having the tournament in Salemtowne's new Babcock Health Care Center. Tours will be available to anyone interested.

The cost is $30 per person.

Retirement seminars offered

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem will have two introductory seminars on "Your Next Chapter: Retirement Reimagined."

The first seminar will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.Oct. 29. The second will be held from 7 to 9 p.m.Nov. 2.

The seminars will be led by C. Michael Thompson, an author and management consultant, and will focus on the nonfinancial issues faced in retirement. The topics include meaning and purpose in later years; deciding whether to retire; reinvestment of time, knowledge and skills; leisure vs. volunteering or part-time work; and more.

Hospice of Davidson needs volunteers

The Hospice of Davidson County needs patient-family and receptionist volunteers for service in its administrative offices, home care and the Henry Etta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House.

Patient-family volunteers receive specialized training, to provide companionship and caregiver support to people experiencing a life-limiting illness. The agency encourages patient-family volunteers to consider a commitment of one to three hours each week.

The hospice will hold an orientation and training session for people who are interested in volunteering with the agency from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the administrative building on the hospice's campus, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington.

Emotions Anonymous meets Wednesdays

Emotions Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Augsburg Lutheran Church, 845 W. Fifth St.

Emotions Anonymous is a 12-step program designed to help people with emotional difficulties gain knowledge and support from others who have had similar experiences.

Free tax-return preparation

AARP Tax Aide-certified volunteers will again be offering free assistance in preparing and e-filing personal federal and state income tax returns in 2018.

The locations will be the Reynolda Manor Branch Library, 2839 Fairlawn Drive, and the Southside Branch Library, 3185 Buchanan St.

More information will be available in January.

Dementia caregivers can get support

Senior Services Inc. offers support groups for families and caregivers of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other memory impairment.

The free meetings are held at the Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose St. in Winston-Salem.

The Connections, the Aging with Purpose initiative of Senior Services Inc., has volunteer opportunities for Forsyth County residents interested in friendship with an area senior citizen.

Meals-on-Wheels needs volunteers

Senior Services Inc. has openings on the Becks route on the second Monday of each month to deliver hot meals to senior citizens in the area.

The meal pickup location is Senior Services, 2895 Shorefair Drive. Deliveries take about 60 to 90 minutes.

Rotary Club hosts Festival of Lights walk

The Rotary Club of Clemmons will hold a fundraiser Nov. 12. It is a walk through the Festival of Lights at Tanglewood Park. It will take place before the Festival of Lights opens to the public. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there for pictures. There will be food trucks and activities for all ages.

Enter through the Idols Road gate. It will open at 5:30 p.m. and the walks will begin at 6:30 p.m. The last entry time will be 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for an individual adult; $35 for a two-adult package; $40 for a family pack; and $10 for children 2 to 12 years old.
