Letter: Mail ballots to all registered voters

Longview News-Journal - 4/9/2018

A ballot for every registered voter

The Texas Secretary of State says voters can vote in person without producing proof of claimed disability. It is legal to apply for a mail ballot on the basis of disability. Texas election officials must accept and count mail ballots without proof of voter disability.

And good reasons exist why no proof of disability should be required to vote in person or by mail. The United States Constitution allows our citizens to vote, whether or not they are solicited to vote. Illegal voting disenfranchisement occurs when there is no definition of disability that can be reasonably enforced. If not all, a great number of us will be disabled or have special needs.

The main objection I hear is that there are political parties, candidates and persons who work to increase the number of mail in ballots, and they don't like it when others who do it also win that way. There is an effective solution to ending the unenforceable and unrealistic arguments about this - just mail out ballots to every registered voter in Texas and count those timely received.

And not make it difficult for "not us" to vote in Texas? No Way, Jose!
