Special Olympics seeks volunteers for Joplin event

Jan. 09--Volunteers are sought to help with the Special Olympics Missouri Regional Basketball Tournament to be held Saturday, Feb. 10, in Joplin.

More than 600 athletes and coaches from across western and mid-Missouri will attend the Joplin event, which is a qualifier for state competition in March.

Basketball competition events include individual skills, team skills, 3-on-3 and traditional 5-on-5. The tournament runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a number of locations. Those places are East Middle School, North Middle School, Soaring Heights Elementary, Eastmorland Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and West Central Elementary School.

Volunteers are needed at all the locations to keep score and to assist the teams during play but no previous experience with the tournament or in basketball is required, according to information provided by Special Olympics Missouri.

Special Olympics Missouri is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 15,300 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports in Missouri.
