February declared Turner Syndrome Awareness month

The Watauga Democrat - 3/1/2018

BOONE - Gov. Roy Cooper and Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz have declared February 2018 as Turner Syndrome Awareness month in the state of North Carolina and in the town of Boone.

Turner Syndrome, also known as Ulrich-Turner Syndrome or gonadal dysgenesis, is a non-inheritable chromosomal disorder that affects about one in every 2,000 female births, according to the proclamation. Individuals with TS have an increased risk of non-verbal learning disorders, increasing problems in mathematics, visuospatial skills, executive function skills, as well as increased risk in acute aortic dissection in young and middle-aged women.

The proclamation states that early diagnosis can ensure that with the help of medical specialists and proper social support, a woman with TS can live a happy, healthy life.

"Turner Syndrome Awareness month is an opportunity to increase awareness of and support research into TS, and to recognize the incredible strength of those living with TS," the proclamation notes.
