BRIEF: Police take steps to understand autism

Aug. 09--The Deputies of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department underwent training this week to learn how to better deal with people who have autism.
Deputies learned techniques to help handle encounters with autistic people and their loved ones, according to a post shared on the Fayette County Sheriff's Department's Facebook page.
Sheriff Mike Fridley said people with autism need special considerations when interacting with law enforcement officials.
"Certain interactions involving autistic persons can sometimes be overwhelming for them and their families," Fridley said. "Deputies are working to understand how to deal with autistic persons and how to make bad situations better and safer for everyone involved."
The Fayette County Sheriff's Department stated that they are grateful for the Fayette County Board of Education and Special Education Specialist Adam Coon for instructing the two days of training.
