Hearing continued for couple charged with child abuse

Beaver County Times - 8/22/2019

Aug. 22--ECONOMY -- A preliminary hearing for two people charged with child abuse continued Thursday.

Daniel Yarmoski, 24, and Mallory Yarmoski, 24, of 100 Ridgewood Drive, Economy, are charged with multiple felony counts of aggravated assault and child endangerment after their 5-week-old son was diagnosed with unexplained fractures and bruising. Doctors at UPMC Children's Hospital told police the child's injuries were the result of abuse.

The Yarmoskis have another hearing scheduled for Sept. 12 at the Beaver County Courthouse.

On June 21, an Economy police officer received a ChildLine report of suspected child abuse. The report indicated that a 5-week-old boy was seen at UPMC Children's Hospital with injuries that were "highly concerning for physical abuse."

The child's injuries included "several fractures to the legs and ribs, as well as bruising on his chin, hand and leg," according to a police complaint. Doctors said no single act could have caused all the fractures and bruising.

The victim was placed in the custody of his grandmother to await follow-up medical care.

On June 28, police interviewed Daniel and Mallory Yarmoski separately. Neither could explain the victim's injuries but said the child had been in their care exclusively. On July 2, the child went back to UPMC for a follow-up, where previous injuries were confirmed.

Pittsburgh-based attorney Robert Disney, who is representing the couple, said UPMC doctors didn't consider all possibilities. He said two separate doctors have diagnosed the child with a rare brittle bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
