Several high-profile cases set for action today in Butler County

Sep. 10--Several high-profile criminal cases are expected to be heard today in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Pre-trial hearings are scheduled for two men charged with rape of a minor and a corrections officer charged with multiple felonies after allegedly conspiring to take drugs into an area prison.

The case against a Middletown man who allegedly stole a Middletown police cruiser and purposely crashed into another cruiser also was scheduled for today, but it has been continued until next week, according to court records.

William L. Powell, 69, of the 1300 block of Oxford State Road, is scheduled to appear before Judge Greg Stephens after the hearing scheduled for Friday was continued, according to court records.

Powell was arrested in September 2018 and later indicted by a Butler County grand jury for three counts of rape, gross sexual imposition, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a minor.

The alleged victim reported sexual abuse beginning at age 10 and continuing until she was 18.

Powell is free after posting a $405,000 bond last year.

Johnanthony Boyd, 20, of the 1200 block of Vine Street, Hamilton, was charged with nine counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, nine counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and one count of rape will appear today before Judge Charles Pater.

He was arrested by Hamilton detectives on May 24 and booked into the Butler County Jail, where he remains incarcerated in lieu of $205,000 bond. The alleged crimes occurred in July and September of 2018.

Daniel Garvey, 28, of Farmersville, a corrections officer at Warren Correctional Institution, was charged with illegal conveyance of drugs, trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs. He was arrested en route to work at a northbound Interstate 75 rest stop in Butler County following an investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

He will appear before Judge Noah Powers.

When arrested, Garvey was in possession of 100 suboxone strips, according to Trooper L. Michael Butler, who is assigned to the patrol's investigative unit that investigates crimes in the two Warren County state prisons.

Jason Cooper, of Middletown, was indicted earlier by a Butler County grand jury for two counts of felonious assault, aggravated robbery, grand theft, two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of vandalism and possessing criminal tools. He allegedly stole a Middletown police cruiser and purposely crashed into another cruiser.

After a doctor determined Cooper's not guilty plea by reason of insanity "will not fly," the plea was withdrawn in July before Pater.

The case was continued until Sept. 17, according to court documents.

Cooper's bond remained at $250,000.
