Warren County man classified lifetime child sex offender

Jan. 08--LEBANON -- A Springboro man accused of abusing two young girls in incidents six years apart has been classified a sex offender for the rest of his life and is headed to prison for two years, according to Warren County court records and officials.

Last week, Brian M. Jones, 31, was classified a Tier III child sex offender and is required for the rest of his life to make in-person verification every 90 days, as well as comply with other reporting requirements, once he completes his prison time, according to court filings.

No sentencing entry had been filed yet on Monday, but Jones was sentenced to two years in prison in a plea bargain, according to court officials.

Jones was scheduled to begin trial today in Warren County Common Pleas Court for for attempted rape, sexual battery and two counts of gross sexual imposition, according to on-line court records.

He has been in the county jail more than eight months, since his arrest on April 18 in Springboro in connection with the cases in Springboro and Lebanon.

He remained there this morning, although jail records said he was headed for prison.

Following his indictment, Jones pleaded guilty by reason of insanity, but was found competent to stand trial and assist in his defense.

Last Wednesday, Jones entered a guilty plea to the single sexual battery charge during a hearing with Judge Timothy Tepe, according to a change-of-plea entry.

He faced up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Amy Tranter, an assistant in the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office, was assigned as a special prosecutor to the case. Tranter and Joseph Auciello Jr., a lawyer appointed to represent Jones, did not respond to requests to explain the plea and sentencing.
