Armed man shot by Fresno officers in domestic violence call

The Fresno Bee - 1/13/2018

Jan. 13--A Fresno man armed with a handgun was shot by police responding to a domestic violence incident early Saturday in central Fresno.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer identified the man as Jason Giannini, 46, who is expected to survive. Police had blocked Shields Avenue between Van Ness and Maroa avenues for the investigation of the incident, but Shields had reopened by 7:30 a.m.

Dyer said officers answered a 911 call from 747 E. Shields at 11:07 p.m. Friday night regarding an unspecified disturbance. As police arrived, a woman identified by police as the wife of Giannini said she had been assaulted by Giannini, who was inside the home with the couple's 5-year-old son and the woman's mother. Officers helped her mother escape through a window.

Officers surrounded the home and were able to see and talk to Giannini as crisis negotiators and a department Special Response Team arrived.

Dyer said that Giannini refused to release the child or surrender, despite an hour of negotiations. Giannini armed himself with a revolver and pointed it out a window at officers.

At 12:18 a.m., Giannini walked onto the front porch holding the gun, closed the door and pointed the weapon at officers. One officer fired several rounds at Giannini, hitting Giannini in the upper torso, who then ran back inside the home. Officers followed and provided medical aid to Giannini until paramedics arrived. Giannini was taken to a hospital.

"Body-worn camera video captured various portions of the incident," Dyer said.

Police reported responding to a previous domestic violence incident involving the couple in 2013. No charges were filed in that case. Giannini faces charges of assault on officers and domestic violence in this case.

Standard procedure for officers involved in shootings is placement on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
