Four South Carolina cops shot -- with one in critical condition -- during search for domestic violence suspect

The New York Daily News - 1/17/2018

Jan. 16--A police officer and three sheriff's deputies on the hunt for a domestic violence suspect were shot early Tuesday in South Carolina, with one in critical condition, authorities said.

The York County deputies were called to a home at around 10 p.m. Monday after a report of a man attacking a woman, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Christian Thomas McCall, fled into the woods before the lawmen arrived at the home, authorities said.

A foot search led by K-9 units ensued on the outskirts of York where they came across McCall at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

McCall fired at the SWAT officers -- two of which were York County deputies and one was a police officer. The officers were then taken toCarolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and one was in critical condition.

York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson identified the officers as sheriff's deputy Sgt. Randy Clinton, Sgt. Buddy Brown, Detective Mike Doty and York Police Sgt. Kyle Cummings. Doty was the officer in critical condition, the sheriff said.

One of the officers underwent surgery and was recovering. The other three lawmen were slated to undergo surgeries, sheriff's spokesman Trent Faris said.

The officers shot McCall during the incident and he was brought to the same hospital the officers were in, Faris said.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said McCall was carrying several "long guns," but didn't mention what type of weapons.

"Please pray for the York PD Officer and York County Sheriff's Deputies who were shot early this morning," the York Police Department tweeted Tuesday morning.

McCall's father-in-law told WSOC that the suspect had been assaulting his wife, but added that it was not how he usually behaved toward her.
