BRIEF: New charges pending against former prison guard

March 19--New charges are pending against a former Lackawanna County Prison guard ensnared in a ongoing probe of sexual abuse at the jail, a state prosecutor said in court today.

George R. Efthimiou, 50, 1121 Loomis Ave., Taylor, currently faces one count of institutional sexual assault, a felony. His preliminary hearing on that charge was rescheduled until April 25 because prosecutors plan to file new charges against him, Deputy Attorney General Rebecca Elo said. She did not say what those charges will be or when they will be filed.

Efthimiou and his attorney, Robert J. Munley, walked from the courthouse today without speaking.

Efthimiou is one of seven former guards charged in the ongoing sexual abuse investigation at the jail.
