Residents encouraged to wear T-shirts to raise awareness about child abuse

Athens Daily Review - 4/20/2018

April 20--To raise awareness about child abuse, officials with the Henderson County District Attorney's Office are wearing Go Blue T-Shirts on April 27.

"Judge (Scott) McKee started the program, but current District Attorney Mark Hall is 100 percent behind the effort to educate our kids about child abuse. He knows how important education is to keeping kids safe," office manager Deanna Browning said.

Money raised from the sale of the T-shirts and area sponsorships is used to promote a poster contest that determines the design of the following year's shirts.

Fourth-graders from around the county who participated in the poster contest are invited to a "fun day" for kids at Whatz-Up Family Fun Park in Seven Points, where kids will be educated about child abuse.

"Always have a buddy around to tell what is happening to you," McKee said.

He explains to children the importance of letting an adult know if something bad is happening to them.

Browning said that Athens ISD students will be allowed to wear the Go Blue T-shirts with their uniforms on April 27. The Go Blue program supports training for law enforcement, CPA, CASA volunteers, victim advocates and sexual-assault nurse examiners (SANE).

Browning said that money from the sale of the T-shirts are also used to give first-, second- and third- place awards to participating area schools.

"We distribute about $120 to 17 school districts."

April 27 is Go Blue Day in Henderson County. Individuals and residents are encouraged to buy the T-shirts to show support for the cause.

The 2018 shirts remain on sale at Island Tans in Athens. The cost is $10, except for sizes over 2X. Those are $12. A baseball-type shirt can be purchased for $20, or $22 for sizes over 2X. The shirts will be on sale until April 27.

Participating businesses may contact the DA's office at 903-675-6100 or the Athens Daily Review at 903-675-5626 to have their photos taken for the newspaper. The deadline to set a time for photos is Monday.
