June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

The Caswell Messenger - 6/17/2018

The population of our Elderly people is growing. They are living a lot longer, abuse is on the rise, and it is vital to bring awareness to our communities to prevent it whenever possible. Elder abuse comes in many forms and sometimes it can be challenging to spot it. Some categories of abuse that are most common are physical, psychological, financial, neglect, and sexual abuse. Abuse may go unnoticed if an elderly person is isolated, having outlived their family and friends. Family members may not have the skill or resources to care for their loved one, leaving their only option to a skilled nursing facility. Family members of elderly nursing home residents need to watch for evidence of abuse and neglect, which may not always be obvious or visible as bruises or broken bones. Some signs can be confused with typical signs of aging such as weight loss and dehydration. 1 out of 10 elderly individuals will experience some form of abuse. Only 1 in 14 abuse cases will be reported to the authorities. Seniors who experience abuse are at a 300% higher risk of death as a result of the abuse. Most of the time the abuse comes from a caregiver or adult relative. If you or someone you know is being abused, Family Services of Caswell County can be a resource for you. We offer help in filing protective orders, advocacy to community and partnering agencies, along with other services depending upon the need of each client.
