Seventh Ward man with history of sexual crimes pleads guilty to rape of 9-year-old

The Advocate - 6/19/2018

June 19--A 7th Ward man accused in a November 2014 rape pleaded guilty to the charge on Monday and has been sentenced to 80 years in prison, according to a news release from District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office.

The man, Kenya McCall, was scheduled to go to trial Tuesday on incidents that happened on Nov. 15, 2014, when a 9-year-old girl said McCall forced her to perform oral sex on him in the bathroom of his home in the 2700 block of St. Bernard Avenue before raping her later that day at a house in New Orleans East.

The victim later disclosed the account to school officials and told a forensic investigator with the New Orleans Child Advocacy Center that McCall had offered her money to keep silent on the abuse.

McCall was initially charged with first-degree rape, which carries a life sentence. His plea was to an amended charge, though -- two counts of second-degree rape and one second offense count of failure to register as a sex offender relating to 1992 guilty plea of second-degree rape and sexual battery charges in Orleans Parish for which McCall received a 10 year sentence, and ended up serving five years. McCall was 16 years old at the time.

McCall was again convicted of sex crimes in 2007, that time in Tangipahoa Parish. He was sentenced to five years in prison in that instance after pleading guilty for failing to register as a sex offender and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

"A defendant with such a history of sex crimes against juveniles does not deserve to walk the streets of our city," Cannizzaro said. "This young victim has moved out of state and remains traumatized by what this trusted man did to her. Her family pleaded that she not have to re-live her experience on the witness stand. I am pleased that we were able to resolve this case in a manner that not only met her needs, but also the safety needs of our community. We can take comfort knowing this repeat sex offender will be unable to harm anyone else for the next three decades."
