BRIEF: Volusia County deputy fatally shoots man during domestic-violence call, authorities say

Orlando Sentinel - 8/4/2018

Aug. 04--A Volusia County deputy shot and killed a 29-year-old Seville man Friday night after responding to a domestic-violence call, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The man grabbed the officer's Taser during a struggle after ignoring multiple warnings to surrender, according to a release sent out Saturday.

The deputy fired multiple shots, killing the man during the struggle, the release said.

Officers responding to the call had interviewed the man and a friend, both of whom were not cooperative, authorities said.

When the woman approached officers to discuss the situation, the man grabbed her, according to police.

The deputy intervened, then used the Taser on the suspect, instructing him to put his arms behind his back.

The suspect refused and, during a struggle, grabbed the Taser as it discharged.

The deputy fired multiple shots at the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The incident happened shortly around 7:39 p.m. near U.S. Highway 17 in Seville.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to the incident, placing the deputy on administrative leave during an investigation.
