Police: Officers injured in domestic violence arrest

The Blade - 8/6/2018

Aug. 06--Two Toledo police officers were injured Saturday while responding to a domestic violence call in West Toledo, according to the department.

Officers were called to a residence about 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of Haughton Drive for an assault offense.

Chad Weis, 43, of the residence, is accused of refusing to answer the door when officers arrived at the home, but they reportedly saw Mr. Weis' head in the window of the front door, impeding the officers' investigation, according to an affidavit filed in Toledo Municipal Court. Once officers were inside the home, Mr. Weis refused multiple verbal commands to come out of his bedroom, according to court documents.

The two responding officers, Thomas Killen and Lawrence Shirey, determined Mr. Weis should be charged with a felony domestic violence, according to police.

When the officers attempted to arrest Mr. Weis, he resisted, police said. As Officer Killen was trying to place Mr. Weis in custody, Mr. Weis arched his back and flung his head backward several times in an attempt to head-butt the officer, according to court documents.

During the struggle, Officer Killen suffered a broken right hand, and Officer Shirey suffered a sprained right thumb.

Mr. Weis' injuries were not specified.

The officers and the suspect were treated and released from Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. Officer Killen is expected to miss work, while Officer Shirey is expected to return to duty, police said.

Mr. Weis was booked in the Lucas County jail at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

He appeared in Toledo Municipal Court on Monday, where bond was set at $70,000 at no percent. He was ordered to have no contact with the reported victims.
