Glynn County assistant principal arrested on molestation charge

Florida Times-Union - 8/8/2018

Aug. 08--The assistant principal at a St. Simons Island elementary school was arrested Wednesday on a child-molestation charge after a former student reported inappropriate sexual conduct in 2014 at that campus, according to the Glynn County Police Department.

Eric James Cabrera, 40, of Oglethorpe Point Elementary School also was charged with child abuse, according to his arrest report.

The investigation began a week ago when the former student came to police with the information about Cabrera, who was a teacher at the time. A judge found probable cause, and a warrant was issued for Cabrera's arrest, Police Chief John Powell said.

"It was important to bring some resolution to this before the new school year started," Powell said.

Police alerted the Glynn County school district, which put Cabrera on administrative leave.

"While this news is very disappointing, we are going to pull together as a staff to ensure students have a great year at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School," Superintendent Virgil Cole said.

Cabrera was the 2012-13 Glynn County Teacher of the Year at Oglethorpe. He was listed as married at the time, with two daughters.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and anyone with information about other incidents should contact Investigator Clay Palmer at (912) 554-7847.
