Celebrate the Week of the Young Child

The Durango Herald - 4/21/2018

This week we celebrated the Week of the Young Child, an annual event intended to raise awareness about the importance of the first five years of life and the role that early care and education has in supporting healthy physical, emotional and intellectual development.

Each day this week, the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County recognized a unique aspect of child development and the educational activities that support these critical developmental milestones.

At midweek, the ECC of La Plata County celebrated the educators who work with young children each day. These educators will wait years to see the benefits of their time and attention. Each child that reads in kindergarten, rides a bike by their eighth birthday, multiplies in fourth grade and runs a relay in middle school owes these accomplishments to their earliest teachers. These earliest teachers include parents, home providers, toddler or preschool teachers.

Take a moment this week to honor the importance of children and childhood; to thank the professionals who honor children daily and to celebrate families in all their forms who nurture our future!

Want to take action to support young children and their families in our community? Volunteer for a local non-profit, contribute financial support to a child care center, or learn more about the needs of our youngest citizens at Jenna Bush Hager's speaking engagement, "How the Power of Compassion Changes Lives" on Wednesday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m., at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall (Herald, Jan. 30).
