Jennie-O ground turkey recalled as part of Salmonella probe

Tribune-Review - 11/16/2018

Nov. 16--Several varieties of Jennie-O brand raw ground turkey have been recalled because they may be associated with a Salmonella outbreak.

The recall is in effect for about 91,388 pounds of ground turkey products produced on Sept. 11 and shipped to retailers nationwide.

The products were sold in 1-pound packages and include these varieties: 93 percent lean with "use by" dates of Oct. 1 or Oct. 2, 2018; taco seasoned, dated Oct. 2; 85 percent lean, dated Oct. 2; Italian seasoned, dated Oct. 2.

The products bear the number P-190 inside the USDA inspection mark.

People who have purchased the products are urged not to consume them. They should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase, officials say.

The federal Food Safety and Inspection Service, working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Arizona Department of Health Services, said a patient tested positive for a Salmonella strain that matched a sample from an unopened Jennie-O ground turkey package in the patient's home.

Investigators have been tracing an illness cluster involving 164 patients in 35 states. Patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different stores, handling raw turkey pet food or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can result in a bacterial illness marked by diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the food.

Most people recover, without treatment, after four to seven days. Some people may develop severe diarrhea that requires hospitalization.
