David P. Willis: Cauliflower recall hits NJ over E. coli fears

Asbury Park Press - 12/20/2018

Dec. 19--As if you needed another reason to not eat your cauliflower.

A California grower has voluntarily recalled cauliflower sent to New Jersey over fears that it was contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

None of the produce recalled by Adams Bros. Farming Inc. of Santa Maria, California, has tested positive for E. coli and no illnesses have been reported.

The recall involves produce harvested between Nov. 27 and Nov. 30. It does not involve all of Adams Bros. Farming's products.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Adam Bros. Farming Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall in cooperation" with the Food and Drug Administration, the company said in a statement.

E, coli can cause diarrhea. Some people may develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause serious kidney damage and even death.

The recall began after sediment from a reservoir, near where the produce was grown, was tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. Filtered and treated water from the reservoir may have come in contact with produce after it was harvested, the company said.

But tests of the filtered and treated water has come back negative for E. coli, Adams Bros. said.

The cauliflower has an Adam Bros. Family Farms label. Consumers should destroy or return the produce to the place it was purchased.
