National Public Health Week starts today

Norwalk Reflector - 4/1/2019

April 01-- Apr. 1--Today through Friday is National Public Health Week.

It is the mission of the Huron County Public Health (HCPH) is to achieve and sustain healthy people and healthy communities throughout Huron County by providing public health services which promote health and prevent disease. HCPH collaborates with partnering organizations to address health issues in the community.

This week HCPH wants to give Huron County residents a better understanding of the health department's role in the community.

What is public health?

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion on healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Public health professionals analyze health effects because of genetics, health behaviors and the environment. HCPH uses this information and data collected to develop and implement programs and services that promote the health of the community. Public health looks at the health of an entire population rather than individual health.

HCPH provides many services to improve the health of the community. The 10 Essential Public Health Services guide HCPH's core functions and allow the agency to better serve the community.

These functions are HCPH's responsibility to the residents of Huron County and include monitoring the health status of the community, investigate and diagnose health problems, inform and educate the community, mobilize community partnerships, support policies and plans to achieve health, enforce laws to provide safe and healthy environments, link people to needed health services, assure a competent public health workforce, evaluate health services, and research and apply innovative solutions.

HCPH recently made available its 2018 annual report. In this report, the public can view many of HCPH's different programs and services. To view HCPH's 2018 annual report and for more information on programs and services available to the community visit www. HuronCoHealth.com.
