Event to bring Zika awareness

Valley Morning Star - 4/30/2018

BROWNSVILLE - Help aid the county in the fight against the Zika virus.

Cameron County Public Health in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will host its 2nd Annual Zika Action Day to bring awareness to the public and help provide solutions.

During the event, participants will be given product demonstrations on different items that help keep mosquitoes, most notable for spreading the disease, at bay.

Zika prevention kits will be given out that contain EPA-approved mosquito spray and dunk tablets that help treat standing water and kill mosquito eggs.

Jessie Hernandez from the Cameron County Public Health Department said the county wants to make sure the conversation around the virus doesn't stop.

"It's still something they need to be concerned about," Hernandez said about people in the Valley.

The county is using the event to raise awareness and spread its message of prevention.

During the event, residents will also be allowed to drop off up to four used tires to be disposed of.

Tires can often be a breeding ground for mosquitoes when they collect rain water in the grooves.

"We want to make sure we don't have trash or piles of items which is why were going to have the tire collection," Hernandez said.

She said the county is also working with the city of Matamoros to try to bring awareness on how their health departments work and provide information on how to safely travel across the border.

"We do have a lot of people that travel and do business," Hernandez said. "We want to make sure that everyone is involved and we want to get the message out there."

Games, giveaways and product demonstrations on how to treat standing water will all be available during the event.
