The Record-Eagle - 5/3/2018

May 03--Ken Bell Track and Field Meet set for Friday

TRAVERSE CITY -- The 42nd annual Ken Bell Track and Field Meet at Traverse City Central will bring in some of the state's top competition Friday.

Seventeen high schools with national- and state-ranked athletes will descend on TC Central's facility for the event.

"The list of some of Michigan's Event Leaders is unprecedented for a meet in Northern MIchigan and track fans will be treated to some outstanding talent and performances at this annual event," Trojans track coach John Lober said. "Local and downstate athletes will push each other to season best times which was the original intent of early season championship style meet. I can't remember when we had so many top ranked boys and girls in this meet, it should be fun to watch. TC Central, TC West, TC St. Francis and G.T.A. are among the city schools competing against state powerhouse teams from East Kentwood and Hudsonville (girls) to name a few."

Nine boys in the meet are ranked in the top 10 in the state and 12 in girls events.

Among many notable boys entrants in the meet are East Kentwood hurdler Jacob Mayhue, who ran the fastest April time in Michigan history (13.88); TC Central's Cassidy Henshaw, the current No. 2 high jumper in the state at 6'6" (which would tie the meet record); state-ranked 400, 800 and 1600 relays from TC West and East Kentwood; East Kentwood pole vaulter Trevor Stephens, ranked No. 2 in state (15'6") and defending shot put state champ Logan Brown of East Kentwood (57'11").

Top girls entries include TC Central's Sielle Kearney (top 5 in the 3200); East Kentwood sprinter Qe'Neisha YoungState, who is ranked in three different events; Hudsonville middle distance runner Melanie Helder; pole vaulter Calli Ostapowicz (12'0"); and East Kentwood's 400, 800 and 1600 relay teams.
