Two more cases of Legionnaires' disease reported

Eagle-Tribune - 9/1/2018

Sept. 01--HAMPTON -- State health officials reported two more cases of Legionnaires' disease Friday.

This brings the total number of people who have been infected by the illness to 14. So far, there has been one death.

The victims were infected on Ashworth Avenue between Island Path and M Path in late July, officials said.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control have been testing to determine the source of the bacteria that cause Legionnaires' disease, whose symptoms include headaches, muscle pain, nausea and fatigue.

Samples collected have been sent to the CDC laboratory in Atlanta. Preliminary results from the testing are expected to be available within the next week or two, health officials said.

The Department of Health and Human Services and CDC will continue the investigation throughout the Labor Day weekend, including additional environmental testing and conducting interviews and re-interviews with the people who contracted the disease.

The state will update the number of confirmed cases on Tuesday unless developments warrant otherwise.

For more information, call the Department of Health and Human Services public inquiry line at 603-271-9461 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the holiday weekend, the line will be open Saturday and Sunday.
