Salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey continues

Patriot-News - 11/10/2018

Nov. 09--Federal officials Thursday reported one death in a nearly year-long investigation into a salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey.

According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention, the death was in California. Since officials began tracking the outbreak in November 2017, 164 people have fallen sick in 35 states, with eight cases reported in Pennsylvania.

There has been no recall issued and no supplier identified.

People have told the CDC they have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased in different locations. The strain was "identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products, and live turkeys."

The specific strain is present in live turkeys and many types of raw turkey products, indicating it could be widespread in the turkey industry, the CDC said.

The agency advises thoroughly cooking turkeys to destroy salmonella and foodborne germs.
