Clothing donations needed for veterans

The Andrews Journal - 4/26/2017

For the second year, Joe Miller Elkins American Legion Post 96 is asking for the public's support with warm winter clothing for the Smokey Mountains Veterans Stand Down in October.

Last year, donations accounted for more than 1,600 pounds of clothing.

The Asheville VA Hospital, along with several local veteran organizations, will be holding its annual Homeless Stand Down at Franklin in October.

Due to a fire last year that destroyed the storage facility and all the government issue clothing, post members are asking for support and assistance. Presently, clothing drop-off boxes are located at the Murphy Public Library on Blumenthal Street and across Alpine Street at the Penland Senior Center. New and near new coats, sweaters, gloves, boots, heavy socks, warm pants, skirts, shirts, etc., are direly needed in both men and women's sizes. Only new underwear and personals are needed.

For details on the needs or the Veterans Stand Down, call Post Commander Glendon Gale at 835-9490 or Mike Casey at the Security Employment Commission office in Murphy at 837-7407.
