Warplane Museum display honors veterans

Livingston County News - 3/22/2018

The National Warplane Museum in Geneseo offered a special display at this month's Gardenscape, the Rochester-area garden show presented at the Dome Arena in Henrietta.

The Warplane Museum's display honored members of the U.S. armed forces, both veterans and those currently serving.

Display designers Karl Naegler and Paul Lazzara created an area envisioned as a military outpost. It featured a one-quarter scale World War II Navy Corsair plane known as the "Whistling Death" or the "Bent Wing Bird," as well as an Army jeep.

According to Naegler the idea was to replicate an outpost, remote and hidden from the enemy, with the plane and jeep representing two possible means of escape. Included in the display were a cooking area, armaments and a lookout post, among other aspects.

The Navy Corsair plane and jeep displayed at Gardenscape were courtesy of the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, preservation and operation of vintage and historical aircraft, particularly those associated with World War II and the Korean War.

Gardenscape was March 8 to 11. For more information on Gardenscape, go online to rochesterflowershow.com/.

The National Warplane Museum's annual airshow is scheduled July 13-15 at the airfield 3489 Big Tree Lane of Route 63, Geneseo.
