Mortgage-free home in downtown Wilson available for veteran

Wilson Daily Times - 7/2/2018

July 02--Operation Homefront is looking for a veteran to receive a mortgage-free home in the Freeman Place neighborhood near downtown Wilson.

In partnership with Wade Jurney Homes, the national nonprofit is accepting applications through July 14 from active and inactive military, National Guard and reserve as well as honorably discharged veterans. Operation Homefront will review the applications, select a family to move into the home in mid-September and develop a customized transition plan with financial counseling and savings planning for the family.

"Having a safe and secure place to call home is a critical factor in helping our military families have the opportunity to thrive, not simply struggle to get by, in the communities they have worked so hard to protect," Operation Homefront President and CEO John Pray Jr. said in a press release. "Which is why we are deeply grateful for Wade Jurney's continued support and thrilled to team with this amazing corporate sponsor to provide another mortgage-free home to another deserving military family.

"Simply put, it will be life-changing."

Since 2012, Operation Homefront has awarded more than 600 mortgage-free homes to military families, including 54 families in 2017.

"After helping to secure the freedoms all Americans enjoy, we want to help our service members and their families realize their own American dream," said Jason Moody, senior manager for housing programs communications with Operation Homefront. "That is possible through our Homes on the Homefront program. We continue to receive donated homes to award veterans and military families of any era around the country through amazing partners like Wade Jurney Homes."

The Wilson house the approved veteran will receive is a 1,001-square-foot home with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a one-car garage. Once accepted into the program, veterans work with caseworkers for one to three years to help develop financial security and become successful homeowners.

"Wade Jurney Homes is honored to once again have the opportunity to give back to our community and the men and women who serve our country," said Wade Jurney Homes President Wade G. Jurney Jr. "Partnering with Operation Homefront gives us the ability to build a new home for those who have given so much for us. We are excited to donate our third home in two years to a military family and look forward to welcoming them into their new home soon."
