The Head Pod is a head and neck support system designed for children with inadequate head control with combined hypotonia of the neck and trunk. Straps fitted around the user's head are connected to a support over the user's head which is attached to the rear of the user's wheelchair. Users who benefit from the Headpod include children ages 2-12 years old who are unable to sustain the weight of their own head due to neck weakness, provided that there is no high extensor tone in the trunk or significant deformities on it. Examples include cerebral palsy, neurological diseases and syndromes or conditions causing hypotonia of the neck muscles. Children older than 12 years with low muscle tone in the neck and trunk and no significant kyphosis or spinal deformities, and adults without mechanical restrictions whose neck can be easily mobilized in all directions can also use Headpod. Use in adults is recommended for periods of time no longer than 60 minutes. Use of Headpod is encouraged during mealtime or computer activities. The head is kept upright while at the same time it gives the user effortless mobility which may improve users effectiveness in other activities.
Allows for better visual interaction with surroundings.
Allows user to have focused and balanced posture and more relaxed muscle tone with less dystonia.
Allows for easier breathing, reducing complications such as respiratory failure, pneumonia, etc.
