---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a robotic wheelchair to assist aging individuals and those with mobility disabilities in to move about while out shopping in public. Researchers at ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories as part of their Ubiquitous Network Robot (UNR) project have created a prototype of a robotic wheelchair that relies on innovative platforms such global positioning system (GPS) navigation, sensor networks, and mobile devices to have the wheelchair automatically meet an elderly shopper at a mall entrance and take that person shopping. The shopper uses a smartphone to reserve the wheelchair, logging in his or her details, and the wheelchair relies on GPS coordinates to meet the shopper without any further assistance. A Wii gaming system controller is used to navigate the wheelchair. Safety features include an on-board laser rangefinder to assist in avoiding collisions with other shoppers and obstacles. This robotic wheelchair is “smart” enough to plot the best route through busy areas automatically. AUTHOR: Edwin Kee. TITLE: Robotic wheelchair offer independence to the elderly. WEBSITE: übergizmo.
