---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype an Electroencephalography (EEG) “brain cap” technology that allows an individual to transfer one’s thoughts into motion. Researchers at the University of Maryland have created a prototype “brain cap” that can transform thoughts into motion using brain signals captured from the cap’s EEG sensors that are attached to user's scalp. The computer connected to the brain cap reconstructs 3D hand movements so that one can control a computer’s cursor using nothing but thought. This complex movement has been transferred over to the ankle, knee, and hip joints that are involved when walking on a treadmill. This device may provide a non-invasive technology which can be used to return motor function to victims of paralysis, injury or stroke; however, research is still being done on “decoding” the differences between the way an individual thinks and matching up the EEG with normal signals.
