---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype technology that is capable of transforming sign language to text to assist individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in communicating with those around them. Developed by scientists in Aberdeen, Scotland, the Portable Sign Language Translator (PSLT) is an application that utilizes a camera on electronic devices such as notebooks and smartphones to translate hand movements into text. The aim of this technology is empower sign language users by enabling them to overcome communication challenges through portable technology. An individual’s signs are immediately translated into text which can be read by the person with whom they are conversing. The intent is to develop an application (or app) that is easily accessible and could be used on different devices, including tablets and smartphones. Developers hope that this software will be released by 2013. AUTHOR: Edwin Kee. TITLE: Sign language to be translated into text. WEBSITE: Ubergizmo.
