The Horizontal Stylus is a homemade stylus designed for individuals with ataxia or any disability that affects the upper extremities and makes it difficult to write so that the person may be able to adequately hold a pen or pencil.

Technical Specifications:

Materials: 4 inch length of 1 inch diameter PVC pipe. Drill. If using the stylus with a mobile device, like an Android or iPAD, use a conductive stylus rather than a pencil (Find these at office supply stores and online)

  • Step 1: Drill the hole for the pencil. (A local store may be willing to drill a ¼ inch hole, in the PVC pipe, which is the perfect size for a pencil or the hole may need to be thinner if using a stylus).
  • Step 2: Break the pencil to desired length or skip this step if using a stylus.
  • Step 3: Insert the stylus or pencil into the drilled hole in the PVC pipe and glue in place with Gorilla Glue.
  • Step 4 (Optional): To make holding the stylus effortless, a 10 inch piece of two-sided Velcro can be looped through the PVC and secured above the knuckles.
