The brailleBOT, a prototype developed by the UNC-Chapel Hill 2012 Senior Design Group, is an educational, electronic toy designed to help children with visual impairments learn Braille and phonics. Also known as AlphaBraille, the brailleBOT provides both audio and tactile feedback, allowing the child to feel the textures of the full Braille alphabet while simultaneously listening to a melodic description of each character. When the child inserts one of the 26 puzzle pieces into the device, brailleBOT will play the matching ABC song for that letter - a song that includes a line about which dots are necessary to make that specific letter. brailleBOT is battery-operated and has a volume adjuster. It is also portable and washable.
