The Egg Carton Buttoning Tool is a do it yourself product designed for people with cognitive and fine motor disabilities to learn how to button.

Technical Specifications: 

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Egg carton
  • Buttons
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Something to poke holes into the egg carton. The author used the sharp end of a corn holder.
  • Ribbon
  • Tissue paper
  • Paper

Step Two: Start by poking the corn holder into the bottoms of the egg carton, making four holes for each button.

Step Three: Thread the pipe cleaner through one of the holes, and through the button and back down through the egg carton.

Step Three: Bend the pipe cleaner back up through the holes and back down to the inside of the egg carton.

Step Four: Twist the pipe cleaner ends together to secure the button, making sure the button to have some give. It should not be completely flat against the egg carton.

Step Five: Start practicing the buttons. Use a long ribbon with slits cut lengthwise. Practice with the egg carton on the child's lap or on the tabletop in front of them.
