The 'Puzzle' Puzzle is a do it yourself brain game activity designed for children to practice their visual spatial skills.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Puzzle pieces
  • Paper (for larger puzzle pieces, use construction paper.)
  • Pencil or chalk

Step Two: The caregiver traces the puzzle pieces onto the paper without letting the child see.

Step Three: The caregiver lines the puzzle pieces up at the top of the paper and numbers each one. (For added challenge, the caregiver places the puzzle pieces in a different direction than they traced them.)

Step Four: The child draws the puzzle pieces at the bottom of the paper, freehand.

Step Five: The caregiver has the child number each of the tracings with the piece that they think fits that shape WITHOUT picking up the piece.

Note: If the child holds the puzzle pieces or turns them, that's not really using their 'mind's eye' so the activity won't help them to improve their spatial reasoning skills.
