The DIY Portable Scan and Read Station is a do it yourself product designed for people with learning disabilities to enable literacy. Reading papers and documents that are not scanned can be very difficult for someone who happens to be blind, so Therese Wilkomm (see organization) created this very simple portable scan and read station using an app called Text Grabber on a cell phone.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Open this up and tip it like this (standing up vertically).

Step Two: Take a standard 9 by 12 piece of acrylic.

Step Three: Put a couple of stoppers here and line them up with the iPhone, so that when the user puts an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper it lines up perfectly. There's a stopper so visually impaired users. There's only one way this can go in here.

Step Four: Tap the center of it and it takes a picture of it.

Step Five: Click on reading it.  It's now recognizing it.

Step Six: The user can turn on Voiceover 1, 2, 3 (VoiceOver reads the document), so essentially what it's doing is it's reading this.

Step Seven: The user discovers that they can take a little bit of this corrugated plastic and put that using double-sided tape and make that a stopper. Then they can make a place to drop their iPhone in here.

Step Eight: Again they can still put their paper in here, tap it, scan it.

Step Nine: With this corner guard the user can pick this up and lay an iPad there, so the camera would be right here shining down.

Options: The user can put a little velcro on it so they can put their piece in here, fold it up, and now can drop into a backpack.
