Smart Keys for REACH Interface Author is an on-screen keyboard and word prediction program designed to increase computer accessibility for people with upper extremity or severe physical disabilities or spinal cord injury. This program is an add-on for the REACH Interface Author (see separate entry). The REACH program offers word prediction, while Smart Keys offers subsequent letter prediction. For example, when the user starts typing the word "lucky" by selecting the letter "l" on the REACH keyboard, Smart Keys starts predicting the next letter by using a unique method for determining which letters follow the letter "l" in the currently loaded dictionary(ies). In one option, Smart Keys removes all letters that do not follow "l" from the on-screen keyboard. This simplifies the keyboard display and makes it easier to locate the next letter. It also simplifies hitting the correct key because there is now a lot of empty space; if the typist misses the target key, a wrong letter will not be typed. When the next letter ("u") in "lucky" is typed, Smart Keys again updates the keyboard to show the letters that follow the sequence "lu." At this point, the user can continue typing "lucky", but can also select it from the word prediction bar to save typing time. If the user is typing a word that is not in the current REACH dictionary(ies), the "Escape" (Restore) key can be selected to bring back all the keys on the keyboard. When the novel word is completed, the "Add Word" button can be pressed to quickly add it to the User Dictionary. If the user wants the benefits of Smart Keys but also wants all the keys to stay on the keyboard, he/she can select the "Gray and Make Active" option (where unlikely keys are "grayed out" but can still be typed), the "Gray and Make Inactive" option (where unlikely keys are grayed out and cannot be typed) or the "Change Colors" option, (where the colors of unlikely keys are changed). Smart Keys can also assist users who use scanning to select keys. When any of REACH's three scanning options are turned on, depending on the options selected, REACH only scans the likely keys or scans the likely keys first, before scanning the unlikely keys. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM or compatible computer. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows XP or better, Pentium IV processor or better, 256 megabytes (MB) RAM, 75 MB of hard drive space, REACH Interface Author and a sound card.
