COVID-19: Nursing homes highlight Picente briefing

Observer-Dispatch - 5/22/2020

Seventeen more Oneida County residents, 13 of them nursing home residents, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing total cases in the county to 836, said County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. on Friday during his daily briefing.

And of the 35 county residents now hospitalized with COVID-19 -- 24 are in the Mohawk Valley Health System, eight in Rome Memorial Hospital and three out of county -- 25 are nursing home residents, he said.

Nursing homes are filled with a vulnerable population, living in close quarters, who have many health conditions, said Director of Health Phyllis Ellis.

"Any kind of respiratory illness or infectious disease, they're not going to be able to fight as well as anyone else would," she said.

COVID-19 has spread more quickly in places where people live in close quarters, whether residential facilities or prisons, Ellis said.

There are still 343 active COVID-19 cases in the county, while another 456 patients have recovered and 37 have died, Picente said.

There are 921 county residents in mandatory quarantine and 888 in precautionary quarantine, with 7,972 residents who have been discharged from quarantine, he said.
