Troopers: Driver outside of disabled car on I-77 in York County killed after crash

Jun. 20--YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- York County, SC

A driver who was outside a disabled car on Interstate 77 in York County was killed when he was struck by a another vehicle, a state trooper said.

The wreck happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday on I-77 southbound near the 87 mile marker between Fort Mill and the North Carolina state line, said Cpl. Matt Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The person who was killed was outside a disabled car that was illegally parked in the travel lanes of the highway, Southern said. The person who was killed was the driver of the disabled vehicle and was standing near the car at the time of the crash, Southern said.

Another vehicle traveling south first struck the parked car, then the person outside the disabled car, Southern said.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was taken to a Charlotte hospital with injuries, Southern said.

The name of the person who died has not been released by the York County Coroner's Office.
