League of Women Voters to hold virtual program on nursing homes & long-term care

Times News - 5/4/2021

May 4—The League of Women Voters of Henderson County will host a program on the topic of nursing homes and long-term care Wednesday, May 12 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Speakers will be Bill Lamb and Don Streb. Lamb is president of the Board of Directors of FOR (Friends of Residents in Long Term Care). He had a 39-year career working in aging-related services for North Carolina'sDepartment of Health and Human Services and then worked at the UNC Institute on Aging as the associate director for Public Service before retiring in 2013.

FOR is a statewide citizens advocacy group founded in 1987 and committed to improving the quality of life for residents living in long term care settings. Their motto is "Quality Care No Matter Where!"

As North Carolina's population ages, more people and their families confront a confusing array of long-term care choices and payment sources with little or no preparation.

Lamb will give an overview of our continuum of long-term care options, provide resources to better prepare for long term care decisions, and give his thoughts about emerging concerns.

Streb is the chairman of Henderson County'sCommunity Advisory Committee, the local branch of The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, created in 1965 by the Older Americans Act.

Nationally, the program has 8,700 volunteers and more than 1,300 paid staff. They regularly visit adult care homes, nursing homes and family care facilities.

Register for the program at lwvhcnc.org. After registering, you will receive a Zoom link to attend the program. The event is free and open to the public.
