Alzheimer Society encourages PQB residents to prepare for heat wave

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is encouraging Parksville Qualicum Beach residents to plan ahead for high temperatures and emergencies.

Situations such as last year's heat dome and wildfire season can be particularly challenging for people living with dementia, according to a news release by Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Living with a disability, physical or mental illness, social isolation, lack of access to resources, communication difficulties and spending the majority of their time indoors can put people at heightened risk, the release said.

"Dementia can affect a person's ability to communicate their needs and recognize when to ask for help," said Rosanne Philbrook, support and education co-ordinator, First Link, for the Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s North and Central Vancouver Island region.

She encouraged people to connect with neighbours, friends and family affected by the disease to make sure they are safe.

Philbrook offered several tips to stay cool:

• Stay in areas with air conditioning, including community centres, shopping malls and any cooling centres set up by municipal governments;

• Drink plenty of water or juice throughout the day;

• Wear lightweight and light-colour clothing;

• Watch for signs of heat strokes and other heat-related illnesses.
