Electrical fire at Delray Beach nursing home prompts partial evacuation, official says

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 7/29/2022

An electrical fire broke out in an elevator mechanical room at a nursing home in Delray Beach, prompting a partial evacuation of the building Friday evening.

The fire alarm rang out at the Abbey Delray South nursing home at 1717 Homewood Blvd. shortly before 5 p.m., said Dani Moschella, a spokesperson for Delray Beach Fire Rescue.

The facility’s sprinkler system quickly controlled the flames, Moschella said. The fire was contained to the mechanical room, fire officials said in a Tweet.

Firefighters went door-to-door inside the building to check for residents, and a few from the four-story building’s first floor were evacuated due to smoke and water from the sprinklers.

No one was injured, and the residents will be able to return to their units, Moschella said.
