GTM Research Reserve is now sensory-inclusive

Florida Times-Union - 12/13/2019

GTM Research Reserve has partnered with KultureCity to offer the Visitor Center and all the programs and events it hosts as sensory-inclusive. As part of the reserve's "GTM for All" initiative, this partnership will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all guests with sensory needs who visit.

The Friends of the GTM Reserve hosted an annual meeting breakfast in which the Sensory Inclusive program was introduced. Elise Summa, lead clinician with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) at the University of Florida-Jacksonville Neurodevelopmental Pediatric Center and Josephine Spearman, education coordinator at the GTM Research Reserve, spoke about the initiative, GTM for All: Accessibility and Inclusivity at the Reserve.

"As part of the certification process, GTM staff was trained on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation," said Ellen Leroy-Reed, executive director of Friends of the GTM Reserve.

Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards (produced in conjunction with Boardmaker) and weighted lap pads will also be available at the Visitor Center front desk for those individuals who may feel overwhelmed.

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over-stimulation and noise. With the new certification, the GTM Research Reserve is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in order to facilitate the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible.

Prior to visiting the reserve, families can download the free KultureCity App from the Apple App Store or Google Play. There, they can view what sensory accommodations are available and where they can access them. Also featured on the app is a "Social Story," which will provide a preview of what to expect during a typical visit.

"To know that you soon will be able to see families visit the GTM Research Reserve with their loved ones who have a sensory challenge and who were not able to previously attend, is truly a heartwarming moment. Our communities are what shape our lives and to know that the reserve is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, is included in their community is amazing," said Dr. Julian Maha, co-founder of KultureCity.
