River Grove police to take plunge for Special Olympics

Chicago Tribune - 2/25/2020

A team of seven River Grove police officers will plunge into the icy waters of Lake Michigan to raise money for Special Olympics.

The Chicago Polar Plunge is March 1 at North Avenue Beach.

“This is the eighth year that the River Grove Police Department has participated,” said Adrian Murillo, officer and department organizer. “We’re hoping to raise $5,000 this year.”

The River Grove team, called Frozen 5-0, has raised $20,000 over the past eight years. This year, there will be contingent of about 20, including family and friends.

Murillo said Mario Paredes from M&M Pro Audio in River Grove participates with the department each year since he has a son with special needs.

“The Special Olympics is very important to us,” Murillo said.

Most officers do a total dunk, he said.

“The feeling is very shocking,” Murillo said. “It wakes you up.”
