APD's new drone helps police find missing child

Jun. 6--ASHEBORO -- An autistic child was returned home safely after going missing for a time on June 5.

According to a report from the Asheboro Police Department, shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, officers responded to Forest Brook Circle in Asheboro in reference to a missing child. When they arrived, they learned an autistic 4-year-old child had walked out the back door of the residence without the parent's knowledge.

Supervisors from the police department deployed a police K-9 in an effort to locate the missing child, but the track was unsuccessful.

Soon after, a detective from the department's Crimes Scene Investigation Unit arrived with a drone that the department had recently purchased.

The certified pilot was able to locate the child lying in a field some distance away from the child's residence. He directed ground officers to the child's location and the child was safely returned home unharmed.
