Everyday heroes

Everyday heroes

Working early elections at South River High School on Tuesday, I watched as a young woman suffering from cerebral palsy wheeled up to the touch screen ballot marking device and struggle to complete her ballot.

After finishing, she wheeled about and thought she sat contorted in her wheelchair, had the brightest smile I can recall seeing in recent times. She gave her assistant a high five and wheeled over to where I was scanning ballots. After she cast her ballot, she gave me a (surprisingly strong) high five and wheeled off.

Everyday heroes don't carry weapons to defend our democracy, they do what is right even if it is difficult because they value what so many take for granted.

This lady proved to me that her voice was equally as important as the most powerful person in the land. I was honored to have her cast her ballot in my precinct.

Annapolis hacked

OK, let me get this correct. The Annapolis City Council approved moving $520,000 from police and fire departments budget so that they could collect $520,000 from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act to pay for an outdated computer software permitting and project system, but say the money from CARES is to pay for police and fire salary and benefits.

Do I have that right? And, now you know one reason why there is reluctance in the U.S. Senate to vote for more Coronavirus Aid funding.

It would be interesting to learn how much of the initial $2.2 Trillion CARES stimulus funding has really not been spent on coronavirus related items. It will be hard to determine how many entities hid the spending through "budget gymnastics."

Ronald Reagan

What the "Ronald Reagan" worshipers in the Republican party, many of which are now "never Trumpers" just don't grasp is that Reagan was the catalyst for Donald Trump.

Trump is the ultimate result of Reagan's "government is the problem" rhetoric. Rhetoric which launched the mindset that has morphed into our current rightwing obsession with the "deep state" and the idea that good government is not only impossible but not even a goal.

Shame on him. Shame on them.

Diversity

In response to your article "New voices needed," I believe Gabrielle Roffe (Manager of Equity and Community Engagement Gabrielle Roffe at the Chesapeake Conservancy) is off base (The Capital, Oct. 25)!

I do not believe there is, or ever has been, a conservation group in Anne Arundel County, or anywhere in this country, that diligently works for a better environment specifically for whit people. I believe the exhausting efforts of these groups benefits everyone, not one race over another.

I also do not believe any conservation group has ever refused conservation volunteers because of race.

Talk to Iris

It appears that Iris Krasnow received incorrect information from her friends concerning the Catholic stance on abortion (The Capital, Oct. 26).

The Catholic Church's teaching is very clear that the act of aborting the life of a pre-born infant is a grave offense against the Author of Life, and cannot, for any purpose, be condoned.

The Democrat Party is a strong supporter of abortion rights, even up to birth, Joe Biden purports to be Catholic, but he no longer is pro-life, having abandoned his church's teaching in exchange for political gain. Accordingly, no Catholic in good conscience can vote for Biden or any other Democrat unless and until the Democratic Party renounces its current support of abortion.

Catholics do not have to vote for President Donald Trump, but they cannot vote for Biden, for to do so is an act of deliberate defiance of the Church, the Body of Christ, and makes those Catholics who do so complicit in scandal.

Jesus said: "Woe to the world because of scandals! For it must needs be that scandals come, but woe to the man through whom scandal does come!" (Matthew, 18:7)
